Halls and Nyquil

Pr*tty
These ads are incredibly awesome. The photography is shot, modeled, styled, and photoshopped brilliantly. The writing is amusing. And the candy-like Halls typography is utterly sublime. I’m dying to know who designed these ads!

Sh*tty
All in all, this isn’t so sh*tty, really. It’s pretty damn boring is all. But the biggest difference between this and the Halls ads is the photography, and Nyquil blows it by going with something a little too real to be truly compelling. If I wanted to see a fat bearded guy with clogged pores, I’d look in the mirror, thank you very much.

Bonus Pr*tty
A little close up of that Halls type, with the actual Halls as punctuation. Damn it’s good.

  1. Agreed. Loving the Halls ads, but perhaps these sick folks should keep their cold germs off the NYC Subway, eh?

The Nyquil ad man does not make me envision a blissful sleep!

  2. I don't get the quasi-medieval tone of the copy. And it seems like it didn't even have the legs to get them through the entire campaign. I suspect a Frankenstein of concepts where the copy from one was paired with the visuals of another. The visuals are excellent. Who doesn't like type that looks edible?

  3. Agreed the copywriting falls a bit flat but that lozenge type is delicious.

  4. oh now, I'm not seeing the copy as "quasi-medieval" so much....but more sassy, snarky mock heroics, ya know?

  5. the copy only gets tiresome when the entire interior of the subway car is end to end Halls. Really, it would have gotten more milage if I was able to look forward to seeing new and different ones.

  7. Personally, I am not a fan of either. I cna appreciate what the Halls ad is trying to do, but the people look so sickly, it doesn't endear me to the product despite the clever use of the kitchy retro feel.

  8. LOVE the illustration style. Retro look works with classic product. Agree that copy is a little odd, also repetitive from poster to poster, but get the strategy - you are a hero for dragging your sick sorry self to work (where you will infect everybody else but that's a whole other conversation). I'd say carry on good lady and take charge partner are the heads that work. The other two feel like lamer variations.

  11. gonna have to disagree with the sh*tty comment on the vicks ads. you can't critique it by saying "ew that guy is gross" because the entire point of the ad is... well, "ew that guy is gross".

    because after all...
    he'll have a "better tomorrow".

    seen at national aaf conference.
