Wednesday Waffler: Pay-O-Matic

I realize I’m going to probably catch a lot of flack for this one, but I just can’t help sort-of liking this Pay-O-Matic logo. It’s so delightfully odd, with that sad little face. It always reminded me of Pentagram’s Joyco logo (designed by John McConnell), which is also quirky, but still fun and gratifying:

Pay-O-Matic is less happy, of course. And decidedly, inappropriately weird. But I think that’s part of its charm. No?

I’ll leave it up to you guys. Pr*tty or Sh*tty?

(I suppose the debate is irrelevant, since they recently rebranded, but it’s safe to say the new identity is way boringer.)

Thanks to Pentagram for permission to use the Joyco image.

  1. hah!

i'm torn, too - it would totally be pr*tty if they actually intended it to be a sad face, but i dunno.. i just don't think that's what they were going for.

so i'm gonna go with sh*tty.

  2. It looks like a guy with a mustache to me.

The redesign is terrible though, I agree.

  3. oh yeah, Veronica's right! its a guy with a monocle and a big mustache. so if that was refined or remotely related to their service, i'd be all for it.

as it is, that poor mangled "m" puts it squarely in the sh*tty camp.

  4. Funny that you mention the mustache and monocle. I also saw it... like a Paul Rand version of the guy from Monopoly (except nevermind, he doesn't have a monocle. Why doesn't he have a monocle?!). But I thought I was the only one.

  5. I usually agree with you but I think this one is crappy(not shitty) because I can't help but think about how much this place is ripping off the poor.
